A Bubbler Pregnancy (Part 2 of 2)

Hey Bubblers!

Here is part 2 of our blog series covering some of the experiences and products we used (and avoided) while bringing our baby bubbler into the world. Essential oils to use, and not use, while growing your baby bump and nursing your new arrival is one of the top questions we receive. Read below for our advice and as always, reach out if you need help! We're all in this together :)

Anxiety

It’s getting closer. She’s running out of room. Was that a contraction?! Dear lord her crib isn’t even put together yet. Did Justin install the car seat?! Bottles sterilized?! How the frig do you sterilize bottles?! Dog hair. Need to get rid of ALL the dog hair. Maybe I can nair the dogs?! They’ll just be sphinx dogs. Yeah. Sphinx dogs. I can’t reach the top corner of the cabinet to clean with a toothbrush. WHY WOULD THEY LET US BE PARENTS?!?!

Yup. That’s the third trimester anxiety for you. Or at least 1/10th of 1% of it. No matter how many times you’ve read “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” or how many youtube birthing classes you’ve taken, it’s a terrifying, exciting, nerve wracking life chapter. And my advice? BREATHE! You don’t need to wax the dogs. You don’t need to repack your hospital bag for the 8th time. Take a bath, go for a walk, put on some music and dance in the kitchen while your fur-covered mutts sleep with one eye open. Also.. surprise! Citrus essential oils (your lemon can work double duty) have uplifting qualities! My absolute favourite diffuser blend for times of stress was 3 drops of lavender and a drop of lemon. Relaxing. Uplifting. CLEAN SMELLING (the cleaning gobblin will enter your brain and refuse to leave). Grapefruit essential oil is also a fantastic stress reliever, day or night.. And helped me with some of those crazy pregnancy dreams too! So get that diffuser going with your favourite scent, kick your feet up while you fold little wee baby clothes, and know that you are going to ROCK your birth. Natural, C-Section, or on the side of the highway covered in fur. YOU GOT THIS!

Other favourites of mine throughout my day-to-day (not just during pregnancy) include our Sweet Lavender Deodorant, Lavender Bath Bomb, Baby Bottom Body Butter (also works as a natural makeup remover and great for any extra dry areas you may have developed), Lavender or Rose Floral Water, Timeless Beauty Facial Lotion, Dead Sea Mud Mask & Peppermint-Grapefruit Foot Scrub. Spoil yourself, or a pregnant mama to be with a little pampering. You’ll be thankful you have these on hand when the weekly bottle of wine is no longer an option.

Oils to Avoid

There is a LOT of misinformation on the web when it comes to oil safety. It’s enough to send anyones head for a spin, pregnant or not! As always, we never recommend ingesting oils unless being overseen by a medical doctor with the proper background in European Aromatherapy. As for skin application, it’s generally recommended to use a low dilution (0.5%-1%) when mixing your own oils. Meaning in a 50ml bottle of jojoba oil, you’d place 0.25-0.5ml (5-10drops) of essential oil. Now. As far as what to avoid, Robert Tisserand is one of the top independent aromatherapist leading the way in non-biased essential oil studies. His most recent publishing of “Essential Oil Safety” is setting the standards for proper use across the world. These are his findings when it comes to oil-caution during pregnancy;

Use in moderation during pregnancy and breastfeeding: Basil, Boswellia paprifera, Carrot Seed, Champaca, Lemon Balm, Lemon Leaf, Lemongrass, May Chang, Melissa, Nasturtium, Tea Tree (Lemon-Scented), Thyme, Verbena.

Avoid completely during pregnancy and breastfeeding: Anise, Araucaria, Artemisia vestita, Atractylis, Birch (Sweet), Black Seed, Buchu, Calamint, Cassia, Chaste Tree, Cinnamon Bark, Costus, Cypress, Dill Seed, Fennel, Feverfew, Genipi, Hibawood, Ho Leaf, Hyssop, Lanyana, Lavender (Spanish), Marjoram, Mugwort, Myrrh, Myrtle (Aniseed), Oregano, Parsley Leaf, Parsley Seed, Pennyroyal, Rue, Sage, Savin, Tansy, Thuja, Western Red Cedar, Wintergreen, Wormwood, Yarrow, Zedoary.

Some of these oils I have never heard of, but some of them I had been using on a regular basis and had to cut out. As far as BnB products to avoid during pregnancy, you’ll want to stay clear of; Cinnamon, Orange & Clove bath salts and bomb, Zen Garden bomb, Cough Be Gone Salts and bomb (Babe’s first cold and Mint Haven bombs are a good alternative if you’ve found yourself with a pregnancy cold), and our Ancient Warmth and Mountain Mint Pain & Inflammation Cream.
